Thank you for your interest in The Muny.

The Muny is the nation’s oldest and largest outdoor musical theatre, celebrating its 105th summer season in Saint Louis’ acclaimed Forest Park. We create seven full scale musical theatre productions in 11 weeks. These internships are what you make of them. The more participation and initiative you bring, the more you will be asked to do. The environment is intense, the stakes are high, and the rewards are endless. Interns will have the unique opportunity to work closely with union professionals including IATSE, USA, SDC, AFM and Actors’ Equity. Our internship program is geared toward college and graduate students pursuing a professional theatre career.

  • Applications will be accepted Dec 13, 2022 – January 20, 2023.
  • Internships are for the entire Muny summer season. Applicants must be available from May 31 – August 20, 2023.
  • You will be contacted by February 6  if you have been selected for an interview.
  • Applicants will be asked to provide a resume, two references, and a brief statement of intent.
  • Internships are paid positions starting salary is $575 per week.
  • Housing is not provided.
  • Interns will need to be fluent in programs specific to your area of interest.

Arts Administration

  • Works in the office of the President and CEO with wide ranging support of all departments.
  • Opportunity to gain knowledge regarding fundraising, budgeting, arts management, and community engagement.
  • Applicant should have strong initiative, and be able to work independently or with a team.
  • Must be Mac and PC proficient, have impeccable organizational skills, superb people skills.
  • Discretion is mandatory.
  • While this role works Mondays through Fridays, night and weekend availability is a must.

Automation

  • Report to the IATSE Automation Dept Head, Technical Director, and Production Manager to assist in the programing of 7 shows over 11 weeks.
  • Maintain up to date paperwork and documentation of automation cues.
  • Have a working knowledge of Excel and Word.
  • Excellent organizational and note taking skills, attention to detail, and a strong adherence to safety protocol a must.
  • Experience with automation a plus.
  • Must have an affinity for outdoor rehearsals and know when to ask a question.

Carpentry

  • Assist the IATSE crew as they build 7 full scale productions in 11 weeks.
  • Report directly to the Head Carpenter.
  • Strong background in hand tools is a must.
  • Must be able to safely maneuver in a shop while staying alert and focused.
  • Must have initiative, drive, good instincts and know when to ask a question.

Costume Design

  • Report directly to the IATSE Costume Shop Manager and Designer.
  • Assist USA Designers as they fit and track 7 shows in 11 weeks.
  • Communicate quickly and effectively with the shop, designers, and dressers.
  • Excellent organizational and note taking skills a must.

Development

  • Assist the entire Development team in a wide variety of tasks & projects, including but not limited to: Researching the impact of the arts within the community; Assisting with finalizing rebranding of annual fund membership program; Implementation of donor benefits.
  • Applicant should have strong initiative and be able to work independently or with a team
  • Must be PC proficient, with very strong Word and Excel skills
  • Must have superb interpersonal skills (in-person and on the phone), impeccable organizational skills, and an affinity to be as helpful as possible
  •   The position has a nice balance of office/computer-based responsibilities and people-based activities
  •  Discretion is mandatory
  •  The Muny’s Development Intern will complete a combination of projects aimed directly at expanding The Muny’s individual and corporate donor relationships throughout the summer.
  •   Internship dates for this position ideally range from May 19 – August 20, 2023. Please indicate your availability below as well as your interest/experience in fundraising. NOTE: Shorter availability will NOT disqualify applicants.

Directing

  • Observe and assist the director during the entire rehearsal process through opening night
  • Attend all production meetings, rehearsals and creative team meetings, while working closely with stage management.
  • A working knowledge of directing is preferred
  • Strong writing and excellent organizational and note taking skills a must
  • The best candidate is not intimidated by strong personalities

Education

  • Must have experience working with children and be able to communicate positively and effectively with parents.
  • Must be highly organized and reliable with strong initiative.
  • Applicant should be proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Discretion is mandatory.
  • Nights and weekends will be required.

Electrician

  • Assist the IATSE crew as they light 7 full scale productions in 11 weeks.
  • Report directly to the Master Electrician.
  • Must be able to safely maneuver in a shop while staying alert and focused.
  • Must have initiative, drive, good instincts and know when to ask a question.
  • Working knowledge of LED fixtures is a plus.

Group Sales and Special Events

  • Assist Group Sales Manager with tasks regarding incoming group sales ticketing, backstage tours, preshow private events, and other duties as assigned
  • Applicant should have strong communication and customer service skills
  • Interest in executing preshow events and supporting community engagement initiatives
  • Ability to work within a team environment
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office programs
  • Flexible work schedule; 20-25hrs per week

Lighting Design

  • Be a part of the Muny’s design studio, home to USA Scenic, Lighting and Video designers.
  • Speed and impeccable organization are a must; an affinity for outdoor rehearsals is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of all standard lighting equipment, DMX, LED, Lightwright, PhotoShop, VectorWorks.
  • Knowledge of LED is a plus
  • Should be familiar with an ETC Ion.

Marketing

  •  Be a part of The Muny’s marketing team in the promotion and sales of The Muny’s summer season. 
  • Marketing, Public Relations, or related major preferred
  • Understanding of basic marketing principles
  • Familiarity with major social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, etc.)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Speed and attention to detail are a must; Great organization skills are recommended
  • Basic photography, image and photo editing and graphic design skills a plus

Materials Coordinator

  • Collaborate with Costumes, Scenery, Props, Electrics, Sound and Design by procuring local wares and services for all seven productions.
  • Position reports directly to the Production Manager.
  • Excellent people skills are a MUST.  Act as the liaison between the Muny and our local vendors.
  • Should be impeccably organized and keep excellent records.
  • Reliable vehicle and valid US drivers license required.  All mileage is reimbursed.

Music Direction

  • Work directly with our musical directors on all seven shows.
  • Make changes in orchestra parts, organize music and take notes at rehearsals.
  • Must be able to read music.
  • Must have initiative, drive, good instincts and know when to ask a question.

Producing

  • Work in the office of the Artistic Director/Executive Producer and Artistic Associate
  • Perform clerical projects that contribute to the running of a fast-paced theatrical office
  • Coordinate flow of information from producer’s office across all relevant production departments throughout the summer season
  • Energetic self-starter with strong initiative and exceptional attention to detail and an affinity to be extraordinarily helpful.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and an ability to manage relationships with a diverse range of personalities
  • Must be Mac and PC proficient, have impeccable organizational, writing and editing skills.
  • Discretion is mandatory.
  • Valid US Driver’s License and reliable vehicle required. All mileage is reimbursed.

Production Management

  • Work with the Production Management team to produce 7 musicals in 11 weeks.
  • Work with Designers from all aspects of production. Assist with technical rehearsals, production meetings, and budgetary coding.
  • Have great attention to detail, organizational skills, and motivation.
  • Discretion is a must.
  • Reliable transportation and a valid drivers license. All mileage will be reimbursed.
  • Must love to organize and maintain accurate paperwork.

Props Carpentry

  • Assist the IATSE crew as they build 7 full scale productions in 11 weeks.
  • Report directly to the Props Master.
  • Strong background in hand tools is a must.
  • Must be able to safely maneuver in a shop while staying alert and focused.
  • Must have initiative, drive, good instincts and know when to ask a question.

Scenic Design

  • Collaborate daily with three USA Scenic Designers and their assistants.
  • Frequently participate in set dressing and props design.
  • Excellent computer skills including Adobe Photoshop and either AutoCAD or Vectorworks is strongly recommended.
  • The Design Studio is a creative environment of artists who share common objectives; everyone collaborates in a close environment for an intense 11 weeks.

Scenic Paint

  • Work daily with USA Scenic Painters, reports to the Scenic Charge Artist.
  • Collaborate to complete 7 large scale musical sets in 11 weeks.
  • Affinity for work outdoors, strong ability to participate in a team environment.
  • Be able to lift 25lbs.

Sound Design

  • Work closely with the USA Sound Designers, Assistant Sound Designer, and IATSE crew.
  • Observe and document from a sound perspective daily rehearsals and note sessions; attention to detail is a must.
  • Gain hands-on experience with sound effect design, track and voiceover recording.
  • Strong knowledge of audio including operational understanding of PA system design/ signal flow and console/ mixer layout and operation is preferred.
  • Must have excellent computer skills, strong organizational and note taking skills, and an affinity for outdoor rehearsals.

Sound Script

  • Work Closely with USA Sound Designers, Assistant Sound Designer, and IATSE Crew to help create the Sound Cueing script for all 7 Shows.
  • Observe and document from a sound perspective, daily rehearsals and note sessions; attention to detail is a must.
  • Application should have experience working with strong personalities and thrive in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Must have excellent computer skills, strong organizational and note taking skills, and an affinity for outdoor rehearsals.

Stage Management Assistant

  • Assist 3 AEA stage managements teams in daily set up, clean up, and other duties as assigned.
  • Report directly to the Stage Management Department Head.
  • Work as a team with two other SM Assistants to provide support for all aspects of rehearsal and performances.
  • A strong background in Stage Management, a love for outdoor rehearsals, run sheets and Excel is a must.

Video Design

  • Be a part of the Muny’s design studio, home to USA Scenic, Lighting and Video designers.
  • Speed and impeccable organization are a must; an affinity for outdoor rehearsals is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of all standard video programs; Photoshop, Adobe Suites.
  • Should be familiar with PremierPro, Illustrator, Final Cut.
  • 3D experience is a plus.

Wig and Make-Up Design

  • Assist the Make-Up Designer, Assistant Designer, Department Head and IATSE Crew with paperwork, organization, and preparation
  • Produce fitting photos and up to the minute accuracy for the wig tracks.
  • Excellent computer skills and a positive personality are a must.
