Making the Magic

Backstage Transformation

The magic of The Muny is created backstage.

Making the Magic

Did you know nearly 900 artists, craftspeople and laborers call The Muny their summer home? Your campaign gifts turned woefully outdated space into state-of-the-art, efficient space that truly inspire what you see on stage.

East And West Towers

The towers provide the structural support for the William T. Kemper Foundation Light Bridge along with men’s and women’s orchestra rooms; sound, electric and prop rooms; and a house management office. In addition, each tower includes 12 massive blowers and 140 directional vents designed specifically to push air into the house. The East Tower also includes the Berges Oak Room located in the same spot under the stage where the roots of one of the original Muny stage oak trees grew for centuries.

Emerson Artists’ Building

The building was completed repurposed and created an efficient flow from the costume shop to dressing rooms and everything in between. The Holekamp Costume Shop is in the lower level of the Artists’ Building with updated laundry facilities and a dedicated craft and dye room for costume craft which we’ve never had before. Dressing rooms, Aunt Jane’s Wig Room and a mic room are all on the second floor. The ensemble dressing rooms now can be reconfigured to meet the demands for each show’s cast—more ladies this week; no problem, we’ll just extend that space!

Backstage Lot

Since everything you see on The Muny stage passes through our backstage lot, it’s critical our crews have the space and facilities they need to create what you see on stage. Lot renovations included new scenic and prop shops, a refurbished crew locker room and modernized prop storage. These upgrades help our team meet, and exceed, the demands of today’s productions.

Our thanks to Emerson, the Holekamp Family Foundation, Linda Bardol & Mickey Chervitz, the Family of Andrew N. Baur, the Berges Family Foundation, Don & Nancy Ross, Hermann Companies, Ameren, Robert & Carol G. Jones, Marilyn A. Schnuck & Stephanie A. Schnuck and Terry & Sally Schnuck for their generous gifts that help us create onstage magic.
