Each summer, we offer dozens of internships across our production and administration departments. The environment is intense, and the stakes are high. But the rewards are endless.
The Muny is the nation’s oldest and largest outdoor musical theatre, celebrating its 106th summer season in St. Louis’ acclaimed Forest Park. We create seven full-scale productions in 10 weeks. These internships are what you make of them. The more participation and initiative you bring, the more you will be asked to do. Interns will have the unique opportunity to work closely with union professionals including IATSE, USA, SDC, AFM and Actors’ Equity. Our internship program is geared toward college and graduate students pursuing a professional theatre career.
Applications for 2025 internships will open Monday, December 9.
- Internships are for the entire Muny summer season.
- You will be contacted by Feb. 16 if you have been selected for an interview.
- Applicants will be asked to provide a resume, two references and a brief statement of intent.
- Internships are paid positions; starting salary is $575 per week.
- Housing is not provided.
- Interns will need to be fluent in programs specific to their area of interest.

Wig & Make-Up Design
Automation
- Report to the IATSE automation department head, technical director and production manager to assist in the programing of seven shows over 10 weeks.
- Maintain up-to-date paperwork and documentation of automation cues.
- An interest and/or experience in welding is a plus.
Excellent organizational and notetaking skills, attention to detail and a strong adherence to safety protocol a must.
Experience with automation is a plus.
Must be able to lift 40 pounds unassisted, withstand outdoor heat in St. Louis and move about the shop spaces safely.
Arts Administration
- Supports multiple departments within the administration offices, primarily working with the Strategic Partnership department and the president & CEO.
- Opportunity to gain knowledge regarding fundraising, budgeting, arts management and community engagement.
- Play an essential role supporting sponsorship benefit delivery on behalf of The Muny and our corporate partners.
Assist in the planning and coordination of our annual MunyCares program, focused on giving back and making an impact within the St. Louis community.
Must have a strong initiative, be able to work both independently and with a team, and have exceptional people skills.
Discretion is mandatory.
While this role works Mondays through Fridays, night and weekend availability is a must.
Carpentry
- Assist the IATSE crew as they build seven full-scale productions in 10 weeks.
- Report directly to the head carpenter.
- Strong background in hand tools and power tools is a must.
Must be able to safely maneuver in a shop while staying alert and focused.
Must have initiative, drive, good instincts and know when to ask a question.
Must be able to lift 40 pounds unassisted, withstand outdoor heat in St. Louis and move about the shop spaces safely.
Costume Design
- Report directly to the IATSE Costume Shop manager and the designers.
- Assist USA designers as they fit and track seven shows in 10 weeks.
- Communicate quickly and effectively with the shop, designers and dressers.
- Excellent organizational and notetaking skills a must.
Directing
- Observe and assist the director during the entire rehearsal process through opening night.
- Attend all production meetings, rehearsals and creative team meetings, while working closely with stage management.
- Practical directing experience is preferred.

Strong writing and excellent organizational and notetaking skills a must.
The best candidate is not intimidated by strong personalities.
Education
- Must have experience working with children and be able to communicate positively and effectively with parents.
- Must be highly organized and reliable with strong initiative.
- Applicant should be proficient in Microsoft Office.
Discretion is mandatory.
Nights and weekends will be required.
Electrician
- Assist the IATSE crew as they light seven full-scale productions in 11 weeks.
- Report directly to the head electrician.
- Must be able to safely maneuver in a shop while staying alert and focused.
Must have initiative, drive, good instincts and know when to ask a question.
Working knowledge of LED fixtures and EOS control is a plus.
Must be able to lift 40 pounds unassisted, withstand outdoor heat in St. Louis and move about the shop spaces safely.
Lighting Design
- Be a part of the Muny’s design studio, home to USA Scenic, Lighting and Video designers.
- Speed and impeccable organization are a must.
- An affinity for outdoor rehearsals and impeccable magic sheets is a plus.
Strong knowledge of all standard lighting equipment, DMX, LED, Lightwright, Photoshop, VectorWorks.
Should be familiar with an ETC Ion.
Marketing: Audience Engagement
- Join The Muny’s in-house marketing team in creating memorable summer experiences!
- Must be enrolled in a relevant undergraduate program, with a focus on marketing, event management or a related field.
- Must have a creative mindset, excellent organizational/multitasking skills and confident interpersonal abilities.
Assist in development and execution of patron pre-show events and engage with patrons to enhance their overall Muny experience.
Collaborate with vendors, staff and other stakeholders to coordinate event logistics.
Identify and explore potential partnerships to expand outreach.
Assist in coordination of promotional events and collaborations.
Nights and weekends will be required.
This is a part-time position of 20 hours per week.
Marketing: Creative Services
- Support multiple functions of the marketing department, including print/digital design, digital marketing and public relations.
- Marketing, graphic design or related major required, with understanding of basic marketing principles.
- An interest in photography and videography is preferred.
Excellent design skills, including Adobe Photoshop and InDesign, are strongly recommended.
Familiarity with major social media platforms and ability to craft appropriate messages for each.
Efficiency, attention to detail and great organization skills are required.
Must have a strong initiative and ability to work both independently and with a team.
Availability Monday through Friday, with nights and weekends as necessary.
Flexibility to perform other marketing duties as needed.
Materials Coordinator
- Collaborate with Costumes, Scenery, Props, Electrics, Sound and Design by procuring local wares and services for all seven productions.
- Position reports directly to the production manager.
- Excellent people skills are a MUST. Act as the liaison between the Muny and our local vendors.
Should be impeccably organized and keep excellent records.
Reliable vehicle and valid US drivers license required. All mileage is reimbursed.
Must be able to lift 40 pounds unassisted, withstand outdoor heat in St. Louis and move about the shop spaces safely.
Music Direction
- Work directly with our musical directors on all seven shows.
- Make changes in orchestra parts, organize music and take notes at rehearsals.
- Must be able to read music and possess a working knowledge of Finale and Sibelius.
Must have initiative, drive, good instincts and know when to ask a question.
Piano skills are preferred but not required.
Pre-Show Sound Lead
- Collaborate and oversee a small team to set up, run and support the Muny Kids and Muny Teens troupes, along with overseeing and managing two pre-show side stages.
- Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds.
- Must be available nights and weekends.
A strong background in sound design and mixing is a must.
They will report to the Education Programs manager and Education assistant.
Pre-Show Sound
- Works with the pre-show sound lead and small team to set up, run and strike two pre-show side stages, and support the Muny Kids and Muny Teens troupes as necessary.
- Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds.
- Must be available nights and weekends.
A strong background in sound design and mixing is a must.
They will report to the Education Programs manager, Education assistant and Teen sound lead
Producing
- Work in the office of the artistic director/executive producer and associate artistic director.
- Perform clerical projects that contribute to the running of a fast-paced theatrical office.
- Coordinate flow of information from producer’s office across all relevant production departments throughout the summer season.
Energetic self-starter with strong initiative and exceptional attention to detail and an affinity to be extraordinarily helpful.
Exceptional interpersonal skills and an ability to manage relationships with a diverse range of personalities.
Must be Mac and PC proficient, have impeccable organizational, writing and editing skills.
Discretion is mandatory.
Valid US driver’s license and reliable vehicle required. All mileage is reimbursed.
Production Management
- Work with the Production Management team to produce seven musicals in 10 weeks.
- Work with designers from all aspects of production. Assist with technical rehearsals, production meetings, designer runs and budgetary coding.
- Have great attention to detail, organizational skills and motivation.
Discretion is a must.
Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license is required. All mileage will be reimbursed.

Props Carpentry
- Assist the IATSE crew as they build seven full-scale productions in 10 weeks.
- Report directly to the props head.
- Strong background in hand tools and power tools is a must.
Must be able to safely maneuver in a shop while staying alert and focused.
Must have initiative, drive, good instincts and know when to ask a question.
Must be able to lift 40 pounds unassisted, withstand outdoor heat in St. Louis and move about the shop spaces safely.
Scenic Design
- Collaborate daily with USA Scenic Designers and their assistants.
- Frequently participate in set dressing and props design and tracking.
- Excellent computer skills including Adobe Photoshop, AutoCAD or Vectorworks is strongly recommended.
The Design Studio is a creative environment of artists who share common objectives; everyone collaborates in a close environment for an intense 11 weeks.
Scenic Paint
- Work daily with USA Scenic Painters, reports to the Scenic Charge Artist.
- Collaborate to complete seven large-scale musical sets in 10 weeks.
- Affinity for work outdoors and strong ability to participate in a team environment.
Must be able to lift 40 pounds unassisted, withstand outdoor heat in St. Louis and move about the shop spaces safely.
A love for a clean work space a plus.
Sound Design
- Work closely with the USA sound designers, assistant sound designer and IATSE crew.
- Gain hands-on experience with sound effect design, track and voiceover recording.
- Strong knowledge of audio, including operational understanding of PA system design, signal flow and console/mixer layout and operation, is preferred.
Must have excellent computer skills, strong organizational and notetaking skills, and an affinity for outdoor rehearsals.
Must be able to lift 40 pounds unassisted, withstand outdoor heat in St. Louis and move about the shop spaces safely.
Sound Script
- Observe and document from a sound perspective daily rehearsals and note sessions; attention to detail is a must.
- Work closely with sound designers, directors, music directors, and all the affiliated assistants to gather specific knowledge of exactly who speaks, sings, or makes a noise at every moment of each of the seven shows.
Report directly to the sound engineers, who use the paperwork created by this position to run the shows.
Excellent interpersonal skills and an affinity for being outdoors in the St. Louis summer are a must.
Stage Management PA
- Work on the team with the PSM and three ASMs, improving and honing your stage management proficiency.
- Get specific show assignments to support a show from prep through rehearsal to closing.
- Must enjoy the outdoor rehearsals. The job is hot and fraught with weather.
Must keep impeccable paperwork and be proficient in Google Drive and Microsoft Excel.
Must love supporting actors and creatives.
Stage Management Assistant
- Assist three AEA stage managements teams in daily set-up, clean-up and other duties as assigned.
- Report directly to the stage management department head.
- Work as a team with two other SM assistants to provide support for all aspects of rehearsals and performances.
A strong background in stage management, a love for outdoor rehearsals, run sheets and being a supportive anchor is a must.
Must be able to lift 40 pounds unassisted, withstand outdoor heat in St. Louis and move about the shop spaces safely.
Video Design
- Be a part of the Muny’s design studio, home to USA scenic, lighting and video designers.
- Speed and impeccable organization are a must; an affinity for outdoor rehearsals is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of all standard video programs; Photoshop, Adobe Suite.
Should be familiar with PremierePro, Illustrator, Final Cut.
3D experience is a plus.
Wig and Make-Up Design
- Assist the make-up designer, assistant designer, department head and IATSE crew with paperwork, organization and preparation.
- Produce fitting photos and up-to-the-minute accuracy for the wig tracks.
- Excellent computer skills and a positive personality are a must.
