Internships

Overview

The Muny is the nation’s oldest and largest outdoor musical theatre, celebrating its 99th summer season in Saint Louis’ acclaimed Forest Park. We create seven full scale musical theatre productions in 10 weeks. These internships are what you make of them. The more participation and initiative you bring, the more you will be asked to do. The environment is intense, the stakes are high, and the rewards are endless. Interns will have the unique opportunity to work closely with union professionals including IATSE, USA, SDC, AFM and Actor’s Equity. Our internship program is geared toward college and graduate students pursuing a professional theatre career.

  • Internships are for the entire Muny summer season. Applicants must be available from May 30 – August 8, 2017 (Development availability dates are on the application)
  • Interns will need to bring their own laptops and be fluent in Microsoft Word, Excel and programs specific to your area of interest.
  • Internships are paid positions at minimum wage; housing is not provided.
  • Applications will be accepted Jan. 1 – Feb. 1, 2017

Position Descriptions

Arts Management
  • Assist the Producer, Casting Director, Company Manager, and Stage Management team in a wide variety of tasks.
  • Applicant should have strong initiative, and be able to work independently or with a team.
  • Must have impeccable organizational skills, superb people skills and affinity to be as helpful as possible.
  • Discretion is mandatory.

Carpentry
  • Assist the IATSE crew as they build 7 full scale productions in 10 weeks.
  • Report directly to the Head Carpenter.
  • Strong background in hand tools is a must.
  • Must be able to safely maneuver in a shop while staying alert and focused.
  • Must have initiative, drive, good instincts and know when to ask a question.

Costume Design
  • Assist USA Designers as they fit, and track 7 shows in 10 weeks.
  • Report directly to the IATSE Costume Shop Manager.
  • Manage costume plot and run sheets complete with fitting photos.
  • Communicate quickly and effectively with the shop, designers, and dressers.
  • Excellent organizational and note taking skills a must.

Development
  • Complete defined development and research projects as listed on application
  • Assist with development events, tour scheduling, and VIP Parking lot administration
  • General administrative duties: i.e. filing, telephone and email communications, etc.
  • Assist the Development Office in its overall goal to steward, recognize and cultivate donors and prospects

Direction/Choreography
  • Observe and assist the director during the entire rehearsal process through opening night
  • Attend all production meetings, rehearsals and creative team meetings, while working closely with stage management.
  • A working knowledge of directing is preferred
  • Strong writing and excellent organizational and note taking skills a must
  • The best candidate is not intimidated by strong personalities and doesn’t take things personally.

Electrician
  • Assist the IATSE crew as they light 7 full scale productions in 10 weeks.
  • Report directly to the Master Electrician.
  • Strong knowledge of all standard lighting equipment is a plus.
  • Must be able to safely maneuver in a shop while staying alert and focused.
  • Must have initiative, drive, good instincts and know when to ask a question.

Lighting/ Video Design
  • Be a part of the Muny’s design studio, home to USA Scenic, Lighting and Video designers.
  • Speed and impeccable organization are a must; an affinity for outdoor rehearsals is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of all standard lighting equipment, DMX, LED, Lightwright, PhotoShop, VectorWorks.
  • Should be familiar with PremierPro, Illustrator, Final Cut and an ETC Ion.

Materials Coordinator
  • Collaborate with Costumes, Scenery, Props, Electrics, Sound and Design by procuring local wares and services for all seven productions.
  • Position reports directly to the Production Manager.
  • Excellent people skills are a MUST.  Act as the liaison between the Muny and our local vendors.
  • Should be impeccably organized and keep excellent records.
  • Reliable vehicle and valid US drivers license required.  All mileage is reimbursed.

Music Direction
  •  Work directly with our musical directors on all seven shows.
  • Make changes in orchestra parts, organize music and take notes at rehearsals.
  • Must be able to read music.
  • Must have initiative, drive, good instincts and know when to ask a question.

Photography Intern
  • Assist Muny Staff Photographer with photography/videography documentation of rehearsals, stage performances, pre-show events and promotions over the 9 week season.  (at least 4 of 7 evening/ nights a week required, Opening Nights Mandatory)
  • Well-versed in shooting out-door and theatre lighting photography. (Nikon equipment available for use.  Intern is more than welcome to use own equipment if more comfortable.)
  • Versed in Adobe Suite including Lightroom/ Photoshop.
  • Local applicants only: Living within 50 miles of St. Louis.

Scenic Design
  • Collaborate daily with three USA Scenic Designers and their assistants.
  • Frequently participate in set dressing and props design.
  • Excellent computer skills including Adobe Photoshop and either AutoCAD or Vectorworks is strongly recommended.
  • The Design Studio is a creative environment of artists who share common objectives; everyone collaborates in a close environment for an intense 10 weeks.

Stage Management
  • Attend all rehearsals, manage props and communicate with the entire production team.
  • As the third member of the stage management team, report directly to the ASM.
  • Be responsible for running stage right during performances and onstage rehearsals.
  • A strong background in Stage Management, a love for outdoor rehearsals, run sheets and Excel is a must

Wig and Make-Up Design
  • Assist the Make-Up Designer, Assistant Designer, Department Head and IATSE Crew with paperwork, organization, preparation and purchasing.
  • Produce fitting photos and up to the minute accuracy for the wig tracks.
  • Excellent computer skills and a positive personality are a must.
