‘Hairspray’ Creators Shaiman, Wittman Attend Opening Night at The Muny

Two people stand and wave in the middle of a cheerful outdoor crowd, with one person wearing a Forever shirt. Behind them is a stage with vintage TVs and show posters. Audience members are taking photos and applauding.

Songwriting duo received a warm welcome from the Muny audience.

The Muny opened Season 108 last night with Hairspray, and it was an honor to be joined by two of the show’s creators — who received an enthusiastic welcome from our audience.

Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman joined us as we brought their glorious musical back to the Muny stage.

Hairspray has a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, music by Shaiman, and lyrics by Wittman and Shaiman. The musical is based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters.

Hairspray was previously produced at The Muny in 2015 and 2009.

Performances of Hairspray, presented by Emerson, continue through June 21. Showtime is 8:15 p.m. nightly.

Season 108 of Broadway musicals at The Muny also includes Shrek The Musical (June 25-July 2), Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific (July 6-12), Disney’s Newsies (July 16-22), Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations (July 27-Aug. 2), Meet Me In St. Louis (Aug. 6-13) and Something Rotten! (Aug. 17-23). The Muny Presents Lionel Richie, a one-night-only concert event, is at 8 p.m. Aug. 29.
