Otis Williams of The Temptations Visits The Muny for Opening Night of ‘Ain’t Too Proud’

The Muny debut of Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations welcomed a guest whose story is told onstage. Otis Williams, the founding and sole surviving original member of the iconic Motown group, attended Monday’s opening performance and addressed the audience after the show.

He praised the Muny production and expressed gratitude to Temptations fans in St. Louis.

“We have been coming to your wonderful city since 1964,” Williams told the cheering crowd. “You were amazing then, and you’re fantastic now, so thank you for the love and support. … We do not take this for granted, because if it wasn’t for you, there would be no us.”

Williams is a five-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, author and producer.

A Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Williams helped lead The Temptations to international fame. His autobiography, Temptations, written with Patricia Romanowski, became the basis for Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations.

The musical has a book by Dominique Morisseau with music and lyrics from the legendary Motown catalog, by arrangement with Sony Music Publishing.

Performances of Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations, presented by Moneta, continue through Aug. 2. Showtime is 8:15 p.m. nightly.

Season 108 of Broadway musicals at The Muny continues with Meet Me In St. Louis (Aug. 6-13) and Something Rotten! (Aug. 17-23). The Muny Presents Lionel Richie, a one-night-only concert event, is at 8 p.m. Aug. 29.
