High School Songwriters Can Get Professional Feedback for Musical Theatre Songwriting Challenge
Calling all high school songwriters! Join the National Alliance for Musical Theatre and member theatres across the country for the NAMT regional Song Share series in January.
The Song Share series is for students interested in the Musical Theater Songwriting Challenge, a unique educational and professional development opportunity for high school students across the country to write and showcase musical compositions that could be part of a musical theatre production. A submission is one song.
These virtual Song Share events offer a one-on-one mini work session where students may share their song, or any piece of it, with a musical theatre pro. Four regional Song Share events are co-hosted by NAMT member theatres, including The Muny, and all students are welcome to attend all Song Share events:
• Jan. 20, Southern Song Share with Aurora Theatre (Georgia), Red Mountain Theatre (Alabama) and Theatre Under the Stars (Texas). Register here.
• Jan. 22, Midwest Song Share with Constellation Stage & Screen (Indiana), The Muny (Missouri) and Theater Latté Da (Minnesota). Register here.
• Jan. 27, East Coast Song Share with Barrington Stage Company (Massachusetts), Prospect Musicals (New York) and Philadelphia Theatre Company (Pennsylvania). Register here.
• Jan. 29, West Coast Song Share with Broadway Rose Theatre Company (Oregon), Diversionary Theatre (California) and La Jolla Playhouse (California). Register here.
Whether you’re looking for advice on your song title, help with a tricky riff or just want someone to appreciate your finished work, Song Share has you covered.
Log into the digital waiting room, and be matched with a mentor for your personal consultation. Click above to register, then drop by any time during the event window.
The Musical Theater Songwriting Challenge has an interactive submission process. All Draft 1 submissions will receive feedback from industry professionals — including NAMT members and Festival of New Musicals Alumni Writers, among others. The Draft 1 submission deadline is Feb. 2.
Students may revise their submission for the Draft 2 competitive round, where a group of winning songs will be selected, and the winning songwriters will be invited to attend Winners Weekend in June in New York City.
Honoring the semiquincentennial of the United States of America, the 2025-26 Songwriting Challenge celebrates the nation’s rich artistic heritage and creativity by shining a spotlight on musical theatre. Young songwriters are invited to submit songs celebrating the rich tapestry of American stories showcasing their unique voices, imaginations and musical sensibilities to help shape the future of this uniquely American art form.
The Musical Theater Songwriting Challenge is presented by the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with NAMT, in collaboration with Concord Theatricals, Disney Theatrical Group, NMPA SONGS Foundation, and the Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation.
