Documentary spotlights an iconic scenic painter whose work filled the Muny stage for five decades.

ST. LOUIS — The Muny has partnered with Cinema St. Louis to host a free screening of Unseen: The Art Life of Dick Godwin, a documentary about the legendary scenic artist who transported Muny audiences to new worlds for 50 years.

Godwin spent his life dazzling directors and designers from Hamburg to Hollywood to Broadway — but his heart was at The Muny, in his hometown of St. Louis. He began working at The Muny at age 16, bringing his artistry to five decades of productions and mentoring a generation of scenic painters whose work continues to shape Muny stages today.

In Unseen, Godwin’s legacy as a scenic artist is honored by colleagues from The Muny and across the United States, while his unseen work as a fine artist receives a long-overdue spotlight. Godwin died in 2011 at age 72.

The 65-minute film, directed by John Olivio, was featured in 2025 at the St. Louis International Film Festival, produced by Cinema St. Louis.

Unseen: The Art Life of Dick Godwin will be presented at 7 p.m. April 1 at the Hi-Pointe Theatre, 1005 McCausland Ave. A Q&A with Olivio will follow the screening. Concessions will be available for purchase.

The screening is free and open to the public, but a general admission ticket reservation is required at hipointetheatre.org/showtimes/unseen-the-art-life-of-dick-godwin-4-1-26-700-pm.
